MAPLETON – The Drayton 150 Celebration Committee presented its final report to Mapleton council on Oct. 14, expressing deep gratitude for the township’s partnership and support in making the anniversary weekend a success.
Event coordinator Ab Hesselink thanked council for designating Drayton 150 an official township event and for moving Canada Day activities to align with the celebration.
“That decision made a world of difference,” said Hesselink. “It brought people together, avoided overlap and gave us a true ‘all-in’ community celebration.”
He added, “Township staff were also wonderful to work with – always helpful, always cooperative, and a big part of our success.”
Held June 27 to 29, the 150th anniversary weekend was designed to be affordable and accessible for all. There was no admission fee; the only cost to attendees was for food.
Hundreds of residents and visitors enjoyed a parade, car show, soapbox derby, live music, family entertainment, community dinners, tournaments, exhibits and a grand fireworks finale.
The highlight of the report was the announcement of the Drayton 150 Legacy Fund, established with a beginning balance exceeding $115,000.
This fund, made possible through the generosity of sponsors and the community, will be managed by the Drayton Community Citizens Association, which Drayton 150 Celebration organizers say has a proven track record of managing community funds.
Annual distributions will be directed to five key organizations: the Drayton Food Bank, Drayton Youth Centre, Drayton Mapleton Agricultural Society, Mapleton Historical Society and the Drayton Legion.
Hesselink emphasized the vital role of volunteers for the anniversary celebration.
“From serving meals to guiding floats and setting up venues, volunteers were the backbone of this celebration,” he said. “Their dedication shows the true spirit of Mapleton.”
In closing, the committee reiterated its thanks to the township, sponsors, volunteers and the wider community.
“The final report underscores not only a weekend of celebration, but also the creation of a lasting legacy for generations to come,” committee members state.
