WELLINGTON NORTH – One person has been arrested and charged after barricading themselves inside a Highway 6 residence on Friday night.
Wellington County OPP were called at around 11:45pm on Sept. 19 for a “potentially armed individual,” according to a press release.
Around midnight, police issued a “shelter-in-place” recommendation for those around Highway 6, east of Sideroad 10 and north of Arthur, but rescinded the order around 2am Saturday.
“Information was still being established in the ever-changing call,” Wellington OPP spokesperson Matthew Burton told the Advertiser.
“Once all units were present and the information was clearly established, the order was lifted as the incident was confined to a single residence north of Arthur.”
The OPP’s regional tactics and rescue unit, emergency response team, canine, and crisis negotiators attended, along with paramedics.
The barricaded person eventually surrendered peacefully and was assessed at a hospital before being held in custody for a bail hearing.
The person, who police are not naming “out of concern for their wellbeing,” has been charged with:
- possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm;
- possession of a loaded, restricted firearm;
- careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition;
- unauthorized possession of a firearm; and
- careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammo.
Most officers had cleared the scene by 7am on Saturday, with some remaining until 4pm.
Highway 6 was temporarily closed outside of Arthur, between Sideroad 10 and Wells Street.
