Speeding an issue during OPP’s long weekend traffic campaign

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police handed out more than twice the number of speeding tickets they did last year during their Civic Holiday long weekend traffic campaign.

From Aug. 1 to 4, Wellington County OPP officers stopped 149 vehicles and laid 71 speeding charges, up from 32 in 2024.

According to an OPP press release, the campaign “targeted the negative driving behaviours that contribute to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage on our roadways (speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving).

“Police also enforced Ontario’s ‘move over law,’ which requires all drivers to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated and, on highways/roads with more than one lane, move over a lane if safe to do so.”

During the campaign Wellington OPP officers also laid:

  • 15 seatbelt charges (down from 19 last year);
  • one distracted driving charge (down from four);
  • two impaired driving charges (no change); and
  • five for failing to move over (up from one).

Across the OPP’s West Region, officers conducted 1,801 traffic stops during the campaign (up from 1,716 in 2024) and laid:

  • 625 speeding charges (down from 699 last year);
  • 148 seatbelt charges (up from 108);
  • 10 distracted driving charges (down from 16);
  • 47 impaired driving charges (45 last year); and
  • 19 fail to move over  charges (12 in 2024).
