Auditions open for Guelph production of The Nutcracker

GUELPH  – Last year 19 students from dance schools in Guelph and surrounding communities were selected by Ballet Jörgen to join the company’s professional cast for Guelph performances.

Nutcracker auditions are scheduled for Sept. 6, and interested young dancers between the ages of eight and 17 years can register online at the Ballet Jörgen website jorgendance.ca.

In the weeks leading up to the performance, the selected students will rehearse regularly at Royal City School of Ballet and Theatre Jazz located in downtown Guelph.

Canadian to its core, this seasonal classic was created in 2008 and premiered to rave reviews.

Choreographed by Bengt Jörgen to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s well-loved score, this delightful re-working of the timeless classic is born from a collaboration with the world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Ballet Jörgen’s The Nutcracker features as backdrops, Canada’s 20th Century landscape artists Franklin Carmichael’s Church and Houses at Bisset (1931), Tom Thomson’s Snow in the Woods (1916) and L.L. FitzGerald’s Trees and Wildflowers (1922).

Audiences embark on a grand journey through northern lands filled with snowflakes, trilliums and woodland creatures.

Roles such as Beaver, Frog, Dragonfly, Squirrel and Bear Cub will be filled by young dancers selected during the auditions.

For the River Run performances, all seats are reserved.

Regular tickets are $61/$56, senior tickets are $57/$52 and student tickets are $44/$39. Premier seating price is $86.

Prices include tax. Tickets are now on sale at River Run Centre Box Office at (519)763-3000 or 1-877-520-2408 or riverrun.ca.
