NORTH WELLINGTON – Seniors programs in Mapleton and Wellington North are set to receive increased funding, according to a June 27 announcement from Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae.
The two townships will receive $25,000 each as part of a $7 million investment to help seniors stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected.
“Our seniors help build our communities and province,” stated Rae in a press release.
“Our government continues to support these important senior programs, ensuring our seniors can enjoy their golden years, while staying active and healthy.”
Minister for Seniors and Accessibility Raymond Cho said “Amid economic uncertainty and rising costs, Premier Ford and our government are proud to protect our seniors and ensure they have access to affordable and reliable community supports.
“The Seniors Community Grant Program (SCGP) is a critical lifeline in every corner of our province for seniors to learn new skills, get fit, enjoy group activities and stay connected to their neighbours and friends.”
SCGP recipients can receive up to $25,000 to support local programs, services and events to provide seniors with opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement.
This year’s investment includes an additional $1 million specifically for programs dedicated to improving the quality of life for senior veterans.
Examples of active projects include:
- a cost-free, dedicated bus service connecting rural seniors to essential community programming in York Region;
- pairing seniors with young adults living with developmental disabilities to collaborate on a series of art-making activities and an exhibit to showcase their artwork in Markham;
- providing senior veterans with a series of weekly art workshops and exhibitions, led by a professional art therapist in eastern Ontario; and
- access to digital literacy and wellness workshops in underserved rural areas around northern Ontario.
“June is Seniors Month in the Province of Ontario,” Rae stated.
“It is important that we recognize and thank the many seniors in Perth-Wellington for their various contributions.”
