GUELPH – Policies about purchasing and religious accommodation have been updated and approved by the Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB).
Purchasing
The purchasing policy was first adopted in 1998 and most recently revised on April 7.
It is reviewed and updated at least once every five years, according to the policy.
It’s purpose is to “ensure ethical, efficient and accountable sourcing, contracting and purchasing activities,” the policy states, with the primary objectives of:
– providing the highest quality goods and services at the lowest overall costs while supporting educational goals;
– maintaining financial integrity and accountability;
– fostering a fair, open and transparent procurement process;
– promoting environmental susstainability and social responsibility; and
– complying with applicable legislation and trade agreements.
According to minutes from the board’s policy and corporate services meeting on March 24, notable changes to the policy include updating terminology and adopting the Building Ontario Business Initiative, a provincial policy aimed at supporting Ontario businesses by prioritizing procurement opportunities within the province.
“Preference (is) given to local suppliers if quality, service and price are equal,” and purchases over $366,800 are restricted “to Ontario trade partners where applicable,” the policy states.
“We are awaiting final direction from the Ministry regarding details on implementation,” states associate director Tracy McLennan in the meeting minutes.
Religious accommodation
An updated religious accommodation policy was presented by director Michael Glazier during the same meeting, who said no major changes were made.
The policy was adopted in 2010 and last revised in 2021.
According to the policy statement, the WCDSB “is committed to the values of freedom of religion and freedom from discriminatory or harassing behaviours based on religion and will take all reasonable steps to provide religious accommodations … to staff, students and their families.
“In accordance with the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church, the [WCDSB] beleives in the dignity of all people and their equality as children of God,” it continues.
“The board recognizes the importance of freedom of religion and strives to recognize value and honour the many customs, traditions and beliefs that make up the Catholic school community … In accordance with the Catholic Church, it is the policy of the board to provide, in all its operations, an educational environment which promotes and supports diversity within its Catholic community.”
