2016 Giant Annual Book Sale has a home

After a great deal of searching and inquiries, the Friends of the Guelph Public Library have found a home for their 10th annual Giant Book Sale this year.

Once again a Guelph family has come forward to support the Guelph Public Library. The Book Sale will be hosted in the huge warehouse space at 69 Huron Street in Guelph.

“We are enormously indebted to John Wood, Susan (Wood) Frasson and Coldpoint Holdings Ltd. for their generosity in making space available for this iconic community event,” said Virginia Gillham, Chair of the Friends of the Guelph Public Library and chair of the sale in a press release. “The book sale has become a huge fundraiser for the library and finding a location is always the biggest hurdle we face every year.”

Planning has already begun and volunteers are working hard to put together a successful event again this year. Donations will be received beginning in August with more details to come.

The Friends of the Guelph Public Library is an arms-length organization whose mandate is to support the Guelph Public Library.

The annual book sale is the major fundraising activity for the group. Income from the sale and other events over the course of each year are used to support various library activities.

In 2014, Friends of Guelph Public Library made the inaugural gift of $10,000 for a Library Endowment Fund.

Most of the funds raised are invested and accrued toward a major gift to the library in support of the planned new main library building. That sum is now more than $430,000.

The book sale has been an annual autumn event since 2007. The first sale was held in Old Quebec Street Mall. It lasted just one day and offered fewer than 20,000 books with a gross amount of $10,000 at the end of the day.

Since then, each sale has been increasingly larger and more complex, but it has continually earned more funding and attracted more customers every year.
