A zoning bylaw amendment to permit the construction of a new library in Drayton has been approved by Mapleton council.
The amendment, approved on Feb. 12, removes a holding provision on the property to accommodate the building.
Municipally known as 106 Wellington Road South, the property is about one-third of a hectare in size and located on the west side of the street, south of Andrew’s Drive.
Public buildings such as a library are permitted on the land, which is currently zoned for commercial uses.
Last month, county council approved a $2.08-million bid for the construction of the Drayton library from Devlan Construction Limited, of Guelph.
The zoning bylaw was the next step towards beginning construction on the building.
The current library, located  at 24 Wood Street, has one of the highest user rates in the county, and local officials, including Mayor and Warden John Green, have lobbied for a new facility for some time.
