The AIDS Committee of Guelph and Wellington County (ACGW) is making what some people may consider a rather unusual request.
The committee, which delivers HIV/AIDS prevention, support and outreach services in Guelph, Wellington, Dufferin, Grey and Bruce counties, is hoping locals will support its goal of having its website (http://www.aidsguelph.org) named Canada’s Worst Charity Website.
The annual contest asks people to nominate the charities they love – and whose websites need some improvements – for the chance to win a $20,000 website makeover.
This year, 12 finalists were chosen and until noon on April 5, people can vote for the winner.
“The AIDS Committee of Guelph and Wellington County is asking for your support in this contest,” stated a press release from the ACGW.
“While the contest is a humorous and fun way to raise awareness about these organizations, the website makeover is imperative in assisting ACGW disseminate relative health information in an accessible and convenient way to the populations they serve.”
Committee officials say any funds raised “go where they are intended and most deserving,” leaving the group with little to spend on web design.
“Having open, frank conversations about HIV, STIs, and unprotected sex can be difficult for many people,” said Megan DePutter, ACGW women’s community development coordinator.
“That’s why easily accessing information online in a way that is fast, accurate, and confidential is so paramount to preventing STIs and HIV transmission.”
ACGW not only wants to improve their website to make it more accessible and easier to use, they also hope that winning the contest will allow them to make their website mobile compatible.
People can vote – once a day from multiple devices until April 5 – online at www.worstcharitywebsite.ca.
