Winter to blame – or thank – for delay to paid parking program

After weeks of snow, the township can't complete installation of parking kiosks and is pausing paid parking in downtown Elora until spring

ELORA – It will be some time this spring before paid parking takes effect in downtown Elora, and you can thank this dreadful winter for that.

Centre Wellington councillor Jennifer Adams asked for an update on the paid parking situation at a Jan. 26 council meeting.

The program, originally set to begin Jan. 5, has been delayed.

Treasurer Adam McNabb said with all the snow and winter storms this year, the township is having difficulty installing the infrastructure at the parking kiosks, although the kiosks themselves are largely installed and some are ready to use.

Payment is to be made at the kiosks using cell phones or digital means, McNabb said, and the snow has hampered installation.

“We want to go full scope with technology,” he said. “We’re waiting for favourable weather so we don’t have a false start.”

Elora is the first urban centre in the township to have paid parking in its downtown core.

The intent is for visitors to pay and the funds used to support tourism programs.

Residents of Centre Wellington can register up to two vehicles per address and be exempt from paying, although they will still have to observe three-hour parking time limits.

Registration can be completed online or at the township office in Elora.
