Winter survival training for Guelph Army Cadets
It is a bit more than average folks do to battle winter, but The 1882 Wellington Rifles Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps are not your average folks.
Last weekend, cadets undertook a winter survival training exercise Feb. 5 to 7.
Training started at the Canadian Forces Armoury in Guelph, where cadets were issued cold weather clothing and gear, and as importantly, instruction in their use.
On Saturday, cadets travelled to the Everton Scout Camp, for further instruction in the outdoor environment.
This ranged from snowshoeing techniques, proper use of camp stoves, setup of arctic tents and learning how to create survival shelters.
Founded in 1862, the Army Cadets are the oldest youth group in Canada.
Cadets Canada (consisting of Army, Air, and Sea Cadets) is the largest federally sponsored youth program in Canada and aimed at young Canadians between 12 and 18.
