Guelph-Eramosa council has approved a new special events policy that will introduce a new fee of $2 per participant for competitive, timed sporting events.

Mayor Chris White said the main impetus for the policy was the “proliferation” of requests for biking events every summer in the township.

The new policy applies to events needing road closures and still requires from organizers proof of insurance, written notice to property owners and advanced signage.

The township also retains the right to approve or deny special event permits at its discretion with consideration given to the number of events taking place on particular roads. Council unanimously approved the new policy, which is available at the township office.

The fees will be placed in the township’s road reserves.
