Wellington North Ward 2 candidates address wind energy

Ward 2 Wellington North candidates Sherry Burke and Bob Mason agree there should be a moratorium on wind turbine projects until the federal study on possible health impacts is completed.

Responding to a question at an Oct. 23 debate, Mason said opinion is varied across the township, but the municipality has to be careful until the health issues are resolved.

Burke said she is “quite proud” she spoke for constituents and voted in favour of declaring the township “not a willing host” for wind turbines.

She opined it is “economically not feasible or responsible” for Wellington North to move forward until the health matter is settled.

Funding wastewater plant

When asked what sacrifices candidates would make to help pay for large projects like the Arthur plant, Burke said the township has been putting away reserves for the project, though it still has a lot of work to do.

She noted the municipality – council and staff together – will have to discuss the matter, including budgetary requirements and funding available.

Mason too was not sure exactly what could be cut to help pay for such projects, but he said the township must look at its roads and bridges study to see what the priorities are.

He added, “I know the Arthur wastewater plant is very important … but I don’t believe we have to spend $15 million to $20 million to solve the problem.”

*Fellow Ward 2 candidate Brett McHugh was absent from the Oct. 23 meeting.
