Wellington Heights students recognized

Two students from Wellington Heights Secondary School in Mount Forest took home a top honour from the 36th Annual DECA Ontario Provincials Competition, Feb. 5 to 7, in Toronto.

Kaitlin Brown and Matthew Orr placed first overall in the Community Service Project category.

The focus of their 60-page written report and subsequent presentation were the business skills they learned in the school’s Warm Winter Wishes Leadership class.

The Warm Winter Wishes class at Wellington Heights Secondary School in Mount Forest raised $37,000 this year to help families in the school community during the holidays. Students, staff, individuals and local businesses supported 23 fundraising events.

Brown and Orr will now compete in the International DECA competition in Orlando, Florida, April 25 to 28. An anticipated 17,000 high school students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni will be at the event.

DECA Ontario is a non-profit organization that hosts a high school business competition and conferences for all secondary schools across the province.

It is a business club that provides enrichment for students interested in a career in business-related areas. Students are challenged to showcase their skills by competing in realistic business situations.

Seventeen students from Wellington Heights competed at the 2015 DECA competition held at the Toronto Sheraton Centre, joining over 100 students from other Upper Grand schools.
