Warmer weather means many can turn off taps

Mild weather has reduced the risk of water services freezing in Arthur and Mount Forest, but residents that have been, or are currently affected by a frozen water service are still encouraged to continue running their taps until further notice.

In late February, those Wellington North communities were experiencing a large number of frozen water services due to the extreme cold. In a March 2 media release the township asked “all residents connected to the municipal drinking water system to let a tap in their house run” to prevent further freezing.

This week, because of milder weather, public works director Matthew Aston revised that directive.

He said, “Only those residents connected to the municipal drinking water system that have a known history of their water line freezing are still encouraged to continue running a cold water tap in their house. All other residents can now turn their taps off.”

He added, “The winter of 2015 has been hard on both the water and sewer team and the township’s water and sewer infrastructure. The team did an excellent job maintaining this important public utility under trying weather conditions and extremely cold temperatures.”

He said, “We appreciate the public’s support to alleviate further frozen services by complying with the request to run taps.”

Anyone who suspects they have a water service issue, should call the water and sewer department at 519-848-5327, township officials state.
