Ward 1 hopefuls tackle Arthur vs. Mount Forest debate at meeting

Dan Yake and Shawn McLeod agree the issue of “inequitable spending” in Wellington North Township is more of a perception than a reality.

The question about dispersal of funds across the municipality was one of several posed to the Ward 1 council candidates at the final all candidate meeting for the municipality on Oct. 23 at the Arthur arena.

“The perception in Mount Forest is that the money goes to Arthur and I assume in Arthur it is [reversed],” said McLeod.

He said those beliefs are more “perceived” than real and suggested better communication from the township could help address the misconception.

Yake agreed there is a “perceived” feeling in both Arthur and Mount Forest that the other community gets more money. He said council has to prioritize projects, regardless of location.

In-camera meetings

When asked about the frequency of in-camera council meetings, Yake said the township needs to ensure closed meetings are kept to a minimum to ensure public participation is encouraged.

However, he noted sometimes they are a necessity – a sentiment that was echoed by McLeod, who said council needs to ensure it follows the rules and there will not be any problems.
