Veterans appreciation day at museum

The Wellington County Museum and Archives will hold a Veteran Appreciation Day on Sept. 12 from 1 to 4pm.

In 2009, the province of Ontario in collaboration with the Dominion Institute challenged communities across the province to think up new and interesting ways to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of veterans over and above the activities of Remembrance Week every November.

This year, the museum is honoured to recognize the veterans of Wellington County and at the same time rededicate the cenotaph statue that once stood at the Belwood cenotaph and now stands in the museum courtyard, at the side of the archives entrance.

The ceremony will be led by Rev. Kate Gregory of Belwood-Metz pastoral charge.

Afternoon’s events include the rededication, and guest speaker Linda Granfield, author of several books about war, written specifically for children.

Museum curator Susan Dunlop will give an illustrated presentation outlining the restoration of the statue.

Roxanne’s Reflections will be on hand with copies of Grandfield’s books to purchase. Refreshments will be available.

As this date is also Grandparents Day, an opportunity for families to honour their veterans and keep their memories and sacrifices alive.
