United Way celebrates volunteers

GUELPH  – With National Volunteer Week over for another year, United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin celebrated the importance of volunteers across communities.

On April 30, teams of workplace volunteers from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA), Linamar, The Co-Operators, the University of Guelph, Sleeman Breweries and Meridian Credit Union, helped with meaningful projects like yard and garden cleanup at community gardens, packing hard reduction kits, and portioning food for local food banks.

More than 40 volunteers contributed 30 hours of volunteer time. National Volunteer Week ran from April 27-May 3.

This year’s theme for National Volunteer Week was “Volunteers Make Waves” – meaning every contribution, big or small, creates momentum and inspires others, forming a powerful wave of collective impact.

“United Way celebrates and thanks volunteers across our community who take time each and every day to leverage our collective capacity and make a positive impact on our community,” said Glenna Banda, executive director of United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin, in a release. “Your efforts are valued and appreciated by so many.”

The last large survey of volunteering in Canada in 2018 found Canadians volunteered approximately five billion hours (equal to roughly 2.5 million full-time jobs). Volunteers are needed now more than ever. Visit unitedwaygwd.com/volunteer to get started.
