UGDSB announces winner of environmental slogan contest

“Live Green. Learn Green. Go Green” is the Upper Grand District School Board’s new environmental slogan.

To launch its new focus on environmental stewardship, the UGDSB held a slogan contest for all students. The winning entry, selected by the board’s environment committee, was written by Centre Wellington District High School Grade 9 student Hannah Litzen.

She learned her slogan was the board’s choice during a surprise presentation at CWDHS on Nov. 12.

UGDSB environmental sustainability lead Karen Acton said Litzen’s entry was chosen because “it was so simple and yet so powerful. The message is clear – it’s about living and learning,” she said. “Going green is something that we have wanted the board to do for sometime.”

As a prize, CWDHS will receive funding to undertake an environmental initiative of their choice. Litzen also received a gift certificate from Janus Books in Guelph.

“Your generation is going to be the one who is going to make a change and bring our planet back into balance. That is going to be one of the jobs that you are going to have to take over,” Acton said.

“Which is why it is so important for the Upper Grand to go green right now and deliver this message to all the students.”

Currently the UGDSB has a number of full-semester environmental programs, eco-portable classrooms at five schools and more than 35 schools with rooftop solar arrays.
