ERIN – The Ontario Land Tribunal will hear a dispute between six developers and the Town of Erin over how the town calculates development charges.
Developers list 30 points of contention, calling into the question the rationale behind calculations determining what development charges are owed to the town for water, public works, and fire services.
Development charges are used help cover the cost of infrastructure needed to accommodate growth, rather than have existing taxpayers cover the cost.
The developers challenging the town include Mattamy Homes, Coscorp, Empire Communities, Hillsburgh Heights, Beachcroft Investments and National Properties.
Coscorp has a subdivision planned on 8th Line, proposed to contain 434 units, and Mattamy’s portion next door would contain 194 units.
Also along 8th line is a 306-unit development proposed by Empire Communities.
Hillsburgh Heights and Beachcroft have proposed 369-unit and 933-unit developments on Trafalgar Road, respectively.
National Properties, along with Solmar, is behind the Erin Glen subdivision.
The town “looks forward to resolving the matter” and is “committed to ensuring that all infrastructure projects are carried out in the best financial interests of our residents,” it said in an Aug. 15 statement.
The tribunal is set to begin hearing arguments in the case in December.
