Since 2004, over one million trees have been planted under the Wellington County Green Legacy program.

The municipality of Guelph-Eramosa has participated for the last four years.

This year, the township will receive its allocation of 5,000 seedlings for distribution on May 7 - rain or shine. To ensure a reasonable distribution, 3,500 trees will be available at Rockmosa Hall and 1,500 at the Marden works garage.

The free tree distribution will commence at 9am; however organizers are requesting donations of food or cash to the East Wellington Community Food Bank, whose staff will be on scene at Rockmosa. Those who make their donation at Marden will have it delivered by staff to the Rockwood Food Bank.

There will be some 23 varieties of hardwood, softwood and evergreens available. Many are limited in number and will likely go very quickly. The varieties include ash, butternut, dogwood, elderberry, elm, hemlock, maple, ninebark, oak, poplar, tamarac, black walnut; evergreens include cedar, pine, and spruce. The greater numbers are eastern white pine and white spruce.

Tree planting instructions will be provided for novice planters. It is suggested seedlings should be planted within the next 48 hours to ensure successful growth.

Green Legacy officials are requesting a report (perhaps even using pictures) on the success, or past successes, in the project to be sent to  robj@county.wellington.on.ca.
