Township okays purchase of street sweeper

Councillors have accepted a single-source quote for a new Pelican three-wheel broom street sweeper.

Following the report for chief financial officer Wes Snarr, council agreed with the recommendation that staff be directed to purchase a sweeper from Joe Johnson Equipment Inc. and that the total purchase price not exceed $180,000.

Snarr explained the machinery will replace a 1981 Pelican street sweeper.

In 2009, council approved the purchase of a new unit under the single source procedures.

That unit was paid for through development charges.

While there are two types of street sweepers available, there is only a single supplier for the Pelican-style sweeper.

He stated the Pelican three-wheel broom sweeper is a unique and proven design with a one-piece conveyer system that has been utilized since the first unit was sold to the City of Boise, Idaho in 1914.

The design provides the operator with an unrestricted view and unmatched maneuverability in tight quarters and around obstacles.

The variable-height, front-dumping hopper can dump loads into a dump truck, thereby achieving operating efficiencies by eliminating the interim step of dumping onto the ground and pick up material with a front end loader.

He added the cost is also roughly $40,000 to $50,000- less than that of a truck-mounted unit.

Funding for this purchase in the amount of $200,000 is included in the 2013 capital budget, he added.

Council approved the recommendation.
