Thorning memorial planned for May 17

The life of local historian Stephen Thorning will be celebrated here on May 17.

Thorning passed away on Feb. 23 after suffering a massive stroke in Utah while riding a train home to Elora from Oakland.

A councillor and deputy-reeve of the former village of Elora, and a longtime columnist for the Wellington Advertiser, Thorning’s popular reports on local history were first published in the Elora Sentinel, then the Fergus-Elora News Express, before he found a larger scope considering history right across Wellington County.

A Remembrance of the Life of Stephen Thorning will be held at the Elora Centre for the Arts, located at 75 Melville Street in Elora, from 2 to 4pm on May 17.

A remembrance exhibit will continue in the centre’s Harris Gallery on May 19 and 20.

Anyone with a photo or other item to contribute to the exhibit is encouraged to contact Susan Thorning before May 15 at 519-846-2221 or susan.thorning@cogeco.ca.
