The topic was not on the agenda, but Mapleton clerk Patty Sinnamon revealed at last week’s council meeting there will be no Harvest Celebration and Farmers Market this year.

Sinnamon made the revelation during a discussion about Local Government Week, Oct. 19 to 25, during which elementary and high school students learn about municipal government.

Councillor Bruce Whale asked if the seven-day, province-wide event would coincide with the township’s own harvest festival, which last year occurred on Oct. 6.

Sinnamon replied there will not be a harvest celebration this year, because there was “no interest” in the event in the Mapleton community.

She explained the township placed notices on its website and in the local Community News earlier this year calling for volunteers - and also held a meeting on the matter - but there was no resident feedback.

There was no further discussion by councillors.

The cancellation of the Harvest Celebration and Farmers Market, which would have been in just its second year, marks the second time in less than 12 months a Mapleton event has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

Last August, the 2007 Community Showcase was also cancelled for that reason.

Councillors did seem agreeable to Local Government Week, although there was no formal vote on the matter.
