Volunteers here are being recognized for their work to make a local ice rink "a social hub" of the community.

On Feb. 28 Guelph-Eramosa Township announced the outdoor rink at Max Storey Park in Rockwood won the 2014 Home Depot Backyard Rink Contest.

"Volunteers have worked tirelessly all winter flooding, shovelling and maintaining the rink at Max Storey Park for the enjoyment of everyone in the community," stated a township press release.

"This rink has become a social hub, bringing residents of all ages together for skating, hockey and winter fun."

As the winner of the contest, volunteers and residents will get to face off with players from the Guelph Storm on March 5 on the outdoor rink.

The game will take place at 6pm at Max Storey Park, located at Dunbar and Ridge Road in Rockwood.

"All members of the community are invited to come out watch the biggest game of the season," stated township officials.

They congratulated "the community and hard-working volunteers" on the win and thanked them for taking care of the rink this winter.
