Report on environmental initiatives presented to Wellington County council

A notice of motion directing staff to investigate impacts and propose measures to deal with climate change on a local level continues to work its way through Wellington County’s committee system.

Planning committee member Bruce Whale, mayor of Mapleton Township, put a motion before the June 25 county council meeting directing staff “to oversee the establishment of a broad-based committee to identify probable impacts of climate change and to propose a course of adaptation and remediation for Wellington County.”

The motion was referred to the planning committee for review and a staff report on the county’s current environmental stewardship initiatives.

The staff report was “received for information” by the planning committee on Sept. 11 and included in the agenda package at the Sept. 25 county council meeting.

Planning committee chair Lou Maieron noted the report contains “quite a number of environmental initiatives, some 37 in all, of the green things we do through our county in terms of reducing our carbon footprint.”

Initiatives listed in the report range from the county’s adoption of “green” building standards and planning policies to promotion of recycling, reuse and reduction through the county’s solid waste services division, and installing GPS units on snowplows to maximize efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

“It’s my understanding the notice of motion was referred to planning committee and they’re going to be looking at it in October/November,” Whale stated.
