Record-breaking turnout for Arthur Optimist fish derby

The Arthur Optimists hosted their annual fishing derby at Burns Pond, formerly Greens Pond, on June 3. Optimist Darryl “Duke” Woods said the club was thrilled to have a record 86 kids registered for the event.  Since 1967, the club has held a free fishing derby here every year. It annually stocks the pond with 100 rainbow trout. Woods explained that over the years, officials have discovered trout much smaller than those originally introduced into the pond, so it seems as though they may actually be spawning. Organizers are grateful to the property’s new owners, Justin Burns and family, for allowing the club to continue the tradition.  The pond was surrounded on all sides by families enjoying the beautiful day while trying their luck with rod and reel. Whether or not a fish was caught, hungry anglers were provided with hot dogs and drinks.
