Realtors national garage sale to aid abuse victims

More than half of women in Canada will experience abuse in their lifetime and over 360,000 children are exposed to family violence each year.

This Saturday, Royal LePage offices across Canada will play host to the National Garage Sale for Shelter, in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation – Canada’s largest public foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting women’s shelters and ending family violence.

Now in its third year, the event brings local residents together with Royal LePage Realtors to raise funds and to help break the cycle of family violence. One hundred per cent of the revenue generated supports the cause.

The nearest events for Wellington County are in Guelph at Royal LePage Royal City Realty, at 25 Waterloo Avenue from 7am to noon, and in Kitchener at Royal LePage Wolle Realty, Brokerage 842 Victoria Street North, with no times set at press time.

More than 115 Royal LePage offices across Canada will host the garage sales.

Now in its third year, the event brings local residents together with realtors to raise funds and awareness to help break the cycle of family violence. Since 2009, the National Garage Sale for Shelter has raised more than $435,000 to support women’s shelters across the country and help fund long-term solutions to end violence in Canada’s homes.

“Violence against women occurs across all ethnic, racial, social and economic groups and in all communities,” said Shanan Spencer-Brown, executive director of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. “In Canada, more than half of women will experience abuse during their lifetime, and every year, 360,000 children are exposed to domestic violence – a shocking but very real statistic.”  Since its inception, the Shelter Foundation has raised $12-million with the help and support of Royal LePage agents, brokers, managers, and administrative staff, along with members of the communities in which they live and work.
