It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, but Puslinch Township has decided to hire a new staff member to look after the municipality’s recreational assets.

Council voted unanimously last week to create the new position of “facility maintainer” and to direct Clerk Brenda Law to hire an individual under a one-year contract.

Law said she would post the position, with an hourly wage range, in the local Newspapers - including a closing date of Sept. 13 for applications.

She explained the successful candidate should have some expertise in refrigeration, as he or she will be looking after the ice surface at the new multi-use recreational facility (MURF) in?Aberfoyle. Law stressed there is an opportunity for the new staff member to use volunteers from the Optimist Club of Puslinch to help out.

The club had offered to manage and maintain the ice rink and dressing rooms at the  MURF, but township officials felt the new building likely requires a hired expert to oversee operations.

Mayor Brad Whitcombe said he liked the idea of a contract, which would allow the township to evaluate how things go the first winter the MURF’s ice will be in place.
