Police seek suspects in copper wire theft near Guelph
Materials and repairs to cost $5,000: OPP
GUELPH/ERAMOSA – Police are looking for clues after a wire theft near Guelph left some residents without internet service last weekend.
Wellington County OPP officials say police responded on July 27 to a call for "damaged telecommunications infrastructure" on Highway 7, east of Skyway Drive, in Gueph/Eramosa Township.
About two lengths of copper wire was "deliberately cut by an unknown suspect" overnight on July 24-25, police stated in a press release.
"Service outages were identified the following morning. The costs of materials and repairs are believed to exceed $5,000."
Wires are "often targeted for their copper content, which is commonly resold ... making them a target for theft," police stated.
The OPP urges residents to report any suspicious activity near telecom infrastructure.
