City police here are offering some tips to motorists for the fall and winter slippery season.

Among them are:

- Get a grip. Make sure to have good tires.

- Make sure to be able to see. Replace windshield wiper blades. Clean the inside of windows thoroughly.

- Check the lights. Use the headlights so that others will see the vehicle and not pull out in front of the vehicle.

- Take  a “brake.” Learn how to get maximum efficiency from brakes before an emergency.

- Watch carefully for black ice. If the road looks slick, it probably is.

- Too much steering is bad. If a slick section in a turn causes the front tires to lose grip, the common - but incorrect - reaction is to continue turning the steering wheel.

- Technology offers no miracles. All-wheel drive and electronic stability control can get drivers into trouble by offering a false sense of security

Sergeant Douglas Pflug continued, “Regardless of your driving skill or vehicle preparation, there are some winter conditions that can’t be conquered. But these tips may help prevent snowy and icy roads from ruining your day.”
