Police beat: Threat, weapon charges

MOUNT FOREST – A local teenager has been charged with uttering threats and assault with a weapon following an altercation here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers “responded to ... an incident at an address in Mount Forest” on Jan. 21 at about 7:30pm.

“The victim did not sustain any injuries,” police stated in a  Jan. 22 press release.

A 16-year-old from Mount Forest was charged with assault with a weapon, administering a noxious substance, uttering threats (to cause death or bodily harm) and failing to comply with  an undertaking.

Asked for more details, OPP media coordinator Carly McKeown told the Advertiser, “As this matter is still before the court, I can’t disclose the weapon used.”

The accused is to appear in Guelph court at a later date. 

Drug, weapon charges

ORANGEVILLE – An Orton man is facing drug and weapon charges after being stopped by police here last week.

Dufferin OPP officials say officers received a tip about  a possible drug transaction near 4th Avenue in Orangeville on Jan. 20 at about 10pm.

“Officers located the vehicle while responding to the call, conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver,” police stated in a Jan. 21 press release.

OPP officials say they seized 26.7 grams of cocaine, a bag of suspected opium, a half-filled bottle of codeine, two spring-loaded knives, an imitation firearm, baseball bat, vehicle, cell phone and cash.

Josh Perkins, 23, of Orton, was charged with obstructing a licence plate, two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition and three counts of possession of a Schedule II substance for the purpose of trafficking.

He is to appear in Orangeville court at a later date.

Careless charge after truck spills load onto road

HARRISTON – A Brampton truck driver has been charged with careless driving after a truck spilled a load of salt on a Highway 23 here.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to a single-vehicle collision on Jan. 20 at about 5am.

“The impact caused the truck to spill its load of salt onto the roadway, resulting in a road closure that remained in place for several hours,” police stated in a press release later that day.

A 35-year-old from Brampton was charged with careless driving and faces a $490 fine and six demerit points, police say.

LCBO theft

FERGUS – Police are looking for help to identify three people connected to a shoplifting incident in Fergus.

On Jan. 15 at about 7pm, Wellington County OPP responded to a theft at the LCBO on Parkside Drive West in Fergus. 

“Three unidentified suspects entered the store, concealed several bottles of alcohol worth over $2,250, and left the premises without making any attempts to pay,” police stated in a Jan. 22 press release.

Police say they are looking to identify three people and one vehicle connected to the theft.

Suspect one is described as a 5’11” brown man, 25 to 30 years old, with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair. He was wearing a white ball cap with a red brim, red track pants with white stripes, black jacket, black backpack and white shoes with black and red accents.

Suspect two is described as a 5’11” brown man in his early 30s with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair with beard. He was wearing a ball cap, sunglasses, black puffer Prada jacket and black track pants.

Suspect three is described as a 5’11” brown man, 30 to 35 years old, with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair with beard. He was wearing grey boots, a black hooded jacket with white graphics, beige hoodie and black jeans.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black 2024 to 2026 Ford F150. The first two letters of the Ontario licence plate are CE or CB, police say.

Officer assaulted

ARTHUR – One individual has been charged following an incident here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were called to an Arthur house on Jan. 23 at about 8:30pm.

“An involved party became aggressive with responding officers,” police stated.

A 34-year-old from Arthur was charged with assaulting a peace officer and failing to comply with a probation order. He is to appear in Guelph court on Feb. 27.

Break-in, assault

ARTHUR – A local resident has been charged with assault and break and enter.

On Jan. 26 at about 4:15am, Wellington County OPP officers responded to “an altercation at an address in Arthur.”

Police say “The victim did not sustain any reported injuries.”

Aaron Schmitt, 38, of Arthur, was charged with assault and break and enter to commit an indictable offence. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
