Police beat: Officers assaulted

FERGUS – A local teenager youth was charged with assaulting police officers following an incident here last weekend.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers responded to “an address in Fergus for an unrelated matter” on March 14 at about 7:30am.

During the call “an individual became aggressive towards officers,” police stated.

A 16-year-old from Fergus was charged with assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm and four counts of assault with the intent to resist arrest.

“The officer sustained minor injuries and attended a local hospital for assessment,” police stated.

The accused, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Trucker charged after pedestrian injured

GUELPH – An Ariss truck driver has been charged in connection with a collision early last month that left a pedestrian  seriously injured.

Guelph Police officials say emergency crews were called to Gordon Street and Stone Road at about 4:40pm  on Feb. 9.

A man and woman, both 18, “were crossing the street when the truck began turning,” police stated in a press release. “The man grabbed his girlfriend’s jacket and pulled her out of the truck’s path before losing his balance and falling down.

“The truck driver tried to stop but the man was struck by the truck’s bumper and front wheel. The man’s injuries were initially thought not to be serious, however assessment at a Hamilton trauma centre revealed significant internal injuries which are expected to be life-altering.”

Police say the man “has undergone several surgeries and remains in hospital.”

On March 9 a 41-year-old Ariss man was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm.

Careless driving

ARTHUR – A Port Colborne driver has been charged after a three-vehicle crash here last week injured two people.

Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews were called to a crash involving two SUVs and a pickup truck, at the intersection of George Street and Charles Street East in Arthur, on March 8 at about 12:45pm.

Police say the crash involved two SUVs and a pickup truck.

The driver of one SUV and the passenger in another sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries.

A 60-year-old from Port Colborne was charged with careless driving.

Break-in charges

MAPLETON – A Howick resident faces charges in connection with a break-in and theft late last month.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to the Mapleton home on Feb. 26 at about 4:30am.

“The suspect fled the residence prior to police arrival and was subsequently arrested on March 7 [at about 6pm],” police stated in a press release.

A 44-year-old from Howick Township was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, break and enter to commit an indictable offence, trespassing at night, criminal harassment, possession of break-in instruments and failing to comply with a release order.

Police say the accused, whose name is being withheld out of concern for their well-being, was held for a  bail hearing.

Took items from vehicle

ARISS – Police are looking for help to find the people responsible for stealing items from a vehicle here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to the “overnight theft from vehicle at a residence in Ariss” on March 10.

Police say the previous night at about 11:45pm “a female suspect exited a dark coloured pick-up truck, driven by another suspect. 

“The suspect walked down the victim’s driveway, accessed their vehicle’s glovebox and stole personal documents. 

“The suspects then departed in the pick-up truck.”

Break-in, attempted theft

FERGUS – Police are looking for tips about a break-in at a business here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to a business on Tower Street in Fergus on March 11 at about 1:30am.

“Suspects arrived in a black Dodge Ram and used a utility bar to smash the front glass door,” police stated in a press release.

“The suspects then went behind the counter and attempted to gain access to a vault. The suspects were unsuccessful in their attempt and departed.”

One suspect is described by police as a white male wearing a grey face covering, black Reebok hoodie, black pants, black/white Air Jordan 1 sneakers and using plastic bags as gloves.

The other is described as a white male, wearing a black balaclava, black Adidas hoodie, black pants, white shoes and grey gloves.

The vehicle is described as a black Dodge Ram with silver rims. 

Boy arrested in assault

GUELPH – A boy has been arrested after an employee at a business was assaulted.

Guelph Police say officers were called to the food court at Stone Road Mall on Feb. 11.

“An employee at a take-out restaurant reported a dispute with a young male, during which the male used a racial slur before throwing a plastic tray and other items at the victim,” police stated. 

“The victim was not injured.”

Officers recognized the teen from security video. 

A 15-year-old Guelph boy was charged with assault with a weapon and is to appear in Guelph court on April 29. 

String of thefts from vehicles

FERGUS – Three Fergus residents reported overnight thefts from their vehicles  last week.

The thefts were reported on March 12 on:

– Tait Crescent in Fergus, during which someone stole bank cards and later made about  $400 in unauthorized purchases;

– Scotland Street in Fergus, stolen was about $4,500 worth of property; and

– Darroch Way in Fergus, stolen was a camera.

The suspect from this last incident is described by police as a white male with short brown hair, wearing two pairs of sunglasses on his head, a medical face mask, black jacket, khaki-coloured pants and black shoes.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include:

– a 63-year-old  from Linwood, who was charged with uttering threats (to cause death or bodily harm)  in relation to an incident in Drayton on March 3;

– a 36-year-old  from Erin, who was charged with spousal assault in relation to an incident in Erin on March 8; and

– a 37-year-old  from Erin, who was charged with spousal assault and uttering threats in relation to an incident in Erin on March 10.

The accused individuals are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
