Police beat: Counterfeit Cash Incident

Fake $100 bills

ARTHUR – Police are looking for help to identify a man they say used counterfeit cash here – although they won’t identify where the incident took place.

Wellington County Ontario OPP officials say that on July 30, officers responded to a fraud call “at a retail business in Arthur.

“It was reported that an individual made a purchase using a counterfeit $100 bill and then returned and attempted a second purchase with another fake bill,” police stated in a press release issued on Aug. 29, more than four weeks after the incident.

“The individual was described as white, male, 20-years-old to 30-years-old, wearing a black graphic hoodie and white/red ball cap.”

‘Side-by-side’ stolen

CLIFFORD – Police are looking for clues after an off-road vehicle was stolen here over a month ago.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were called about a theft at a residence on Allan Street East in Clifford on July 31. 

“It was reported that a black/yellow 2013 Can-Am Maverick side-by-side was stolen,” police stated in a press release issued on Aug. 29, more than four weeks after the incident.

Partner abuse, harassment

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Police have responded to several domestic incidents involving “intimate partner” abuse this summer.

On Aug. 5, Wellington County OPP responded to a disturbance at a residence in Centre Wellington. A 36-year-old resident of Centre Wellington was charged with assault causing bodily harm (choke, suffocate or strangle), spousal assault and uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death. The accused was held for bail.

In July (police did not provide a date), Wellington County OPP responded to a complaint about a Minto resident harassing a Wellington County resident by phone, email and text. A 38-year-old resident of Minto was charged with criminal harassment (repeatedly communicate) and is to appear in Guelph court on Sept. 22.

In July (police did not provide a date), Wellington County OPP responded to a complaint about  a Perth resident making threats over the phone to “a previous intimate partner who resides in Wellington County,” police say. A 40-year-old resident of Perth was charged with harassing communications and failing to comply with an undertaking. The accused was held for bail.

Police catch ‘fishtailer’

FERGUS – On Aug. 23 at about 9pm, a Wellington County OPP officer monitoring traffic on St. David Street South allegedly observed a black pickup truck “fishtailing” on the road, police say.

An 18-year-old driver from Fergus was charged with performing a stunt and is to appear Guelph court on Dec. 6.

Suspended driver

MAPLETON – On Aug. 4 at about 1:30pm, a Wellington County OPP officer stopped the driver of a white sedan on Line 86 here.

A 24-year-old driver from Hillsburgh was charged with driving while suspended and driving without insurance. The defendant is to appear in Guelph court on Nov. 15.
