Police announce results of ‘Operation Safe Driver’ campaign

LONDON – The OPP laid over 140 charges across the West Region during a recent traffic campaign targeting commercial motor vehicles.

“Operation Safe Driver,” an annual campaign designed to improve traffic safety, ran from July 12 to 18.

OPP officials say police laid 143 charges across 13 detachment areas, targeting the lead contributing factors in commercial motor vehicle collisions, including speeding, improper lane changes and following too closely.

Charges included:

- four for careless driving;

- six for distracted driving;

- eight for defective equipment;

- 11 for seatbelt violations;

-18 for disobeying a sign;

- 25 for permit, plate and driver’s licence violations;

- 25 for speeding; and 

- 30 for inspection and maintenance violations.

“It’s every driver’s responsibility to share our roads safely. This is critical when large commercial vehicles are present,” stated traffic inspector Mike McConnell.

“Poor driving behaviours on the part of both commercial and non-commercial operators can lead to serious consequences and lengthy delays on major highways.”
