OPP get new commissioner

ORILLIA – OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino has sent congratulations to his successor, OPP Deputy-Commissioner Chris Lewis, who was announced as the 14th leader of the OPP by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty last week.

“It is a great honour and also a challenge to lead a diverse and complex police organization like the OPP,” Fantino said. “I wish Deputy Lewis the best, and I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition and the continuing success of this great organization.”

Fantino will retain command until the end of July.

Most recently, Lewis served as Deputy-Commissioner of field operations, a position he has held since 2007. He was responsible for front-line service delivery to over 300 municipalities across Ontario.

His command included overseeing a large portion of the more than 5,900 uniformed officers in 165 OPP detachments province wide.
