GUELPH – A Guelph man faces several charges after a police officer was punched in the face while attempting to arrest a shoplifter last Friday night.
Police were called to a business near Paisley Road and Elmira Road South just after 9pm on Nov. 24.
Police say a man entered after the store was closed, stole product and fled out an emergency exit when police arrived.
“The man was located hiding nearby. As an officer approached, the man punched him in the jaw. The officer was not injured,” police stated in a press release.
A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with assaulting police, theft under $5,000, causing a disturbance and breaching probation. He is to appear in Guelph court on Jan. 9.
