It is with heavy hearts and a sense of profound loss that the family of Leon Evan Stickle announces his peaceful passing at home on November 5th, 2025, at the age of 77. Beloved husband to Nancy for 58 years and beloved father of Jayne, Christine Woodard (Ken) and David. Devoted and proud Poppa of Olivia, Ella, Mitchell and Ava. Cherished brother of Gail Pearson (Jim) and Beverly Somerton of Glace Bay, NS (Gerald). Beloved brother-in-law to Richard and Linda Smith (Calgary) and Steven and Patricia Smith (London). Cherished Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Leon’s family was truly the centre of his universe. Leon and Nancy were married in 1967. Leon worked at Northern Electric while also working evenings in the OHA and Senior A hockey as a Linesman. Leon joined the NHL in 1970 as an on ice official and worked for the league until 1997. The Central Hockey League recruited Leon to supervise officials in 2000, and in 2003 the NHL asked him to fulfill the role of Supervisor of Officials, until he retired. During his NHL career, Leon officiated 6 Stanely Cup finals, 2069 regular season games, 206 playoff games, 2 Canada Cups, the 1979 Challenge Cup and Rendez-vous. He also officiated 4 NHL All-Star Games. In his retirement he went on to supervise and mentor officials in the OHA and OHL as he loved working with young aspiring officials and was so proud of all of their successes. Leon treasured his caring neighbours and many friends. As an avid golfer, Leon enjoyed spending time with his buddies at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club. A favourite pastime was working in his yard and gardens. The family would like to thank Dr. Meagan Williams, Dr. Chris Lund and especially Nurse Samantha, for her compassion and outstanding care. The family is grateful to the staff of Medigas (Praxair) for their support. As per Leon’s wishes, a cremation has taken place and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus, Ontario. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Leon, and in lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider Groves Memorial Hospital or the Aboyne Rural Hospice.
