BIRD, Gloria Janie Theresa (née Matthews)

August 9, 1942 - December 29, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria Janie Theresa Bird, who left us peacefully on December 29, 2025, following several years in long-term care. Gloria was a woman who truly lived up to her name—bringing a sense of joy and brightness to everyone she met. A legendary “social butterfly,” Gloria didn’t believe in strangers. Whether you were a lifelong neighbour or a tourist looking lost on a street corner, you were greeted with her signature warm smile and expert directions. She possessed a natural gift for connection that made the world feel a little smaller and much friendlier. For many years, Gloria was the heart and soul of Keepsakes & Treasures, where she served as the owner and operator. Her shop was more than a business; it was a reflection of her love for beautiful things and her even greater love for the people who walked through her door. Gloria’s greatest treasure was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, John Bird. The pair shared a lifetime of love, celebrating their milestone 60th Wedding Anniversary in July 2025—a testament to a bond that stood the test of time. She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Mary Matthews. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her sons, Steve and Jeff, along with her three beloved grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Friends and family were invited to gather to celebrate Gloria’s vibrant life on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Hope Springs United Church (75 Geddes Street, Elora). A visitation was held from 11:00am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00pm, with interment that followed immediately at the Elora Municipal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hope Springs United Church in Gloria’s memory, honouring the community that meant so much to her. Gloria’s smile may be gone from our streets, but the warmth she left behind will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
