The Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards celebrate Canadians who make a difference.

Any individual volunteer,  group, business or not-for-profit organization that deserves recognition for volunteer work in their community is eligible for recognition.

These awards celebrate volunteers, not-for-profit organizations and businesses which devote time and energy to improving the well-being of families and communities.

A total of 17 awards are given at the regional and national levels, including awards for emerging leaders and life-long achievement. Award recipients are recognized at a ceremony and can identify an eligible not-for-profit organization to receive a grant.

The nomination period for this year’s awards runs until April 15, 2013.

The awards were instituted in 2012, with Barrie area family physician Dr. Rick Irvin named as Ontario’s inaugural recipient. Irvin is widely recognized for his pioneering work in palliative care.
