New van boasts wheelchair access

East Wellington Community Services now has a wheelchair accessible van to add to its transportation program, providing additional opportunities for local residents.

For seniors or adults over the age of 18 who struggle to find  reliable transportation for medical and therapeutic appointments or basic daily activities including grocery shopping and getting to the bank, EWCS now offers  a solution.

Through the group’s continued partnership and funding received from the Local Health Integrated Network of Waterloo-Wellington (WWLHIN), the agency has a transportation van that is wheelchair accessible, which further allows the agency to help those in the community be able to retain independence and remain in their community while providing an important support service.

“Having this van as part of our transportation program is an exciting addition for EWCS and is another way that we can continue to help senior’s remain active and connected in their community, while keeping up with their medical or therapeutic appointments through access to reliable transportation,” said Kari Simpson, executive director with East Wellington Community Services.

“With East Wellington being rural and not having a public source of transportation, this service is helping to address a need for seniors or adults who have a physical or developmental disability that really struggle when it comes to having a reliable ride for their different appointments. It is through our strong partnership with the Waterloo-Wellington LHIN that allows us to provide this service to those in our community,” said Sherri Plourde, manager, senior services with EWCS.

“It is due in part to this service that has allowed many in the community to be able to stay here and be active instead of moving to larger centres like Guelph or Orangeville.”

The transportation service is available Monday to Friday and is offered with a cost for service. Forty-eight hours notice is required as the lead time to schedule transportation needs.
