New shot for those allergic to flu shot

Haven’t got a flu shot because of an allergy to neomycin? Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health has a solution.

All WDG Public Health flu clinics now have a vaccine that is compatible with anyone who is allergic to neomycin.

“One of the components of the universal flu vaccine is the antibiotic, neomycin,” said clinical services program manager Rosalyn LaRochelle.  “ It’s not a problem for most people but if you have an allergy to it, you can’t get the shot – and that puts you at risk for getting the flu. The Ministry of Health has released a quantity of vaccine that doesn’t include neomycin, and we are happy to provide that option at our flu clinics.”

The flu shot stimulates the immune system to build antibodies against the virus, making it stronger and ready to fight off the flu.

The sooner people get it, the earlier they will be protected.

Flu shots will also be available by appointment at WDG Public Health offices in December.
