Neighbours replaced trees on Union Street
Fifteen sugar maples were planted here on Union Street recently, thanks in large part to the efforts of resident Alison Crozier.
For the last three years, Crozier has worried about the declining state of the sugar maples that line Union Street. This was the year she contacted a number of neighbours and discovered there was plenty of interest - and she identified homes for 15 new street trees. Everyone understood the need to help lessen the growing shock experienced by the new trees as the existing canopy dies off.
The trees were ordered at a volume discount from Little Tree Garden Centre, which delivered the 10-foot trees along with mulch - an essential ingredient for all new trees.
Six NeighbourWoods tree stewards volunteered to help plant the trees and give advice on planting day. Although all the trees were planted on private property and paid for by the residents, they will grow into street trees - a legacy for future generations.
