Need for speed – and weed

GUELPH – On April 15 at about 8:45am, a Wellington County OPP officer was monitoring traffic on the Hanlon Expressway near Laird Road.

Police say the officer observed a white vehicle that appeared to be travelling above the posted speed limit. The vehicle was allegedly clocked on radar at about 130km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Police also seized an open bag of suspected marijuana that was accessible to the driver.

Raneithan Shanmugathasan, 30, of Scarborough, was charged with racing a motor vehicle, driving with cannabis readily available and driving with cannabis in an open container. He is to appear in Guelph court on June 5.

The driver’s licence and the vehicle were seized for a period of seven days as per statute.
