Municipalities: Don’t let good hand hygiene clog toilets

WELLINGTON COUNTY - It’s fine to use hand wipes and disinfectant wipes around your home - just don’t flush them down the toilet.

Not even wipes marked “flushable.”

Local municipalities are reminding residents that, when flushed down the toilet, wipes and paper towels can cause sewage back-up, overflows and spills which are a public health risk, cause expensive damage and threaten the environment.

Residents are also reminded the water doesn’t have to be running for 20 seconds while you wash your hands. Wet your hands, turn the water off, lather up, and for 20 seconds rub your hands, fingers, palms and cuticles. Then turn the water back on and rinse.

Residents don’t have to forget about the environment as they remember their health.
