Minto, Wellington North get grants

Two Wellington municipalities are among those that will receive a share of infrastructure funding announced by the province on Feb. 27.

The province has approved 78 projects through the application-based component of the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) which will help communities maintain, repair, expand or update vital infrastructure such as bridges, roadways, water mains and sewage treatment systems.

The Town of Minto will receive up to $454,149 to replace and lengthen a bridge structure and install new guard rails.

Minto Treasurer Gordon Duff said the funding is designated for work on the Bride Road culvert between the Third Line and Fifth Line. Council was expected to deal with the funding agreement at the March 3 meeting. The cost of the project is estimated at $610,000.

The Township of Wellington North will receive up to $870,000 to replace a portion of its water, wastewater and storm systems. The project includes road and intersection improvements.

“Roads, bridges and water infrastructure are essential to rural communities across the province. By partnering with communities and investing in these projects, our government is committed to ensuring municipalities have the tools they need to build and maintain critical infrastructure,” stated Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Jeff Leal, in a press release.

“Investing in essential infrastructure projects not only increases the quality of life in communities across Ontario, but also creates jobs and generates significant economic growth in areas that need it most. I’m pleased that we are moving forward with our plan to support small, rural and northern communities, and we will continue partnering with municipalities across Ontario to make unprecedented infrastructure investments,” Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure Brad Duguid.
