McKay received 500 more votes than his opponent Kevin Johnson, securing 1,615 votes (59%) in the ward, which includes Puslinch Township and Ward 1 in Guelph-Eramosa. Johnson garnered 1,116 votes (41%) total across the ward.

In Puslinch, where both men reside, McKay beat Johnson 1,238 to 948, and in Guelph-Eramosa McKay won 377 to 168.

“I’m very pleased,” said McKay. “I ran … a very good campaign and met a lot of interesting people.”

He attributed his success to door-to-door campaigning and also to the fact he “took the high road and didn’t get involved in mudslinging.”

Despite some new faces on county council McKay said the new group should be able to work well together.

Johnson said, “Obviously I would have liked things to turn out differently in my race but I congratulate Mr. McKay on his hard work in securing another four years on county council.”

He added, “Election night was a great experience for me. As a first-time candidate I was so impressed with the hard work that all the township staff and election officials do before and on election day … I think we all owe them a big thank-you.”
