May is Hearing Awareness Month

Help celebrate Hearing Awareness Month in May—you just might improve the quality of your life.

If you suspect you have a hearing loss, or someone you know isn’t hearing well, then you already understand the challenges of effectively communicating. Hearing loss is not just about a lack of sound, it affects relationships and social participation in everyday activities. Because hearing loss usually happens slowly over time, people often don’t notice when they are starting to lose their hearing, and when they do notice they often delay doing anything about it. According to research, people wait on average seven years from when they first notice their hearing loss to finally seeking help. “That’s a lot of time to go without hearing well, yet hearing aids can have a huge impact on the quality of one’s life. Hearing loss also doesn’t just happen to the person with the loss—it affects the whole family,” says Lynne McCurdy, Doctor of Audiology and owner of Wellington Hearing Care. “When people finally get hearing aids they wish they had acted sooner.”

Researchers have long been aware of these social impacts of hearing loss but recent research has pointed to a host of other health related consequences—including increased risk of falls and an increased risk of dementia.  Researchers at Johns Hopkins University recently reported the latest findings in this area. According to lead researcher Dr. Frank Lin, “individuals with impaired hearing lose more than an additional cubic centimetre of brain tissue each year compared to those with normal hearing. If you want to address hearing loss you want to do it sooner rather than later.”(Source: www.hopkinsmedicine.org)

Fortunately, Guelph is home to the award winning Audiology clinic Wellington Hearing Care. The clinic has the latest in technology for testing hearing and fitting hearing aids. Combining comprehensive counselling on how to use hearing aids with solid fitting protocols, the professionals at Wellington Hearing Care will do all they can to ensure a positive outcome for patients and an improvement in their quality of life. “All hearing aids need to be adjusted to match each patient’s hearing loss and fitting needs,” says Lynne. “Although hearing aid technology has clearly improved, the true difference that we offer is in how hearing aid technology is selected and adjusted to meet the individual needs of each patient.”

Lynne is a leader in her field. She has 25 years experience as an Audiologist and was the recipient of the Canadian Academy of Audiology’s prestigious Clinical Excellence Award in 2012. The clinic also won the 2013 Readers’ Choice Platinum Award and was selected as one of the top three finalists for the Guelph Chamber of Commerce Award of Excellence under the small business category.

They offer top notch hearing health care with a personal touch and it shows. Recent customer survey results revealed that of the almost 200 respondents, 99% said they would confidently refer friends and family to Wellington Hearing Care. In addition, 96% reported receiving outstanding service 100% of the time.“You really have to know the person and their lifestyle to be able to meet their specific needs with the appropriate technology,” Lynne says. “It’s what sets us apart from the big box stores or chains that sell hearing aids.”
