The township has decided to proceed with a doctor recruitment donation after all, although it will be 33% less than North Wellington Health Care originally requested.

In January, it asked Mapleton, as well as Wellington North and Minto, for a donation of $15,000 each for the recruitment of health professionals.

Mapleton donated $10,000 in 2007 and 2008, although last year at least one councillor expressed concern about what the municipality was getting for that money.

And earlier this year, councillors seemed concerned with the 50% increase in the request from the Minto-Mapleton health professional recruitment committee. At that time they deferred a decision “until further discussions have taken place.”

Last week, Clerk Patty Sinnamon told council it was time to make a decision on the matter.

Mayor John Green said since its original request, the recruitment committee “found some additional money” and was now asking for $10,000 instead of $15,000.

Green said council approved $13,000 for donations in the 2009 budget, $10,000 of which was earmarked for doctor recruitment.

Council unanimously approved the donation of $10,000 to the NWHC recruitment committee.
