Man charged with attempted murder in Fergus stabbing

FERGUS – A local man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a woman in a home here on Saturday.

Wellington County OPP responded to a 911 call at a house on Highland Road in Fergus on Oct. 17 at about 7:40am.

“Upon arrival, officers located the victim, a 59-year-old female resident of the home, who appeared to be suffering from serious injuries,” police stated in an Oct. 21 press release.

The woman was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and has since been released.

A neighbour who witnessed the aftermath of the incident told the Advertiser the suspect exited the home with his hands up and complied with police commands.

A 27-year-old Centre Wellington man is charged with attempted murder.

Police say the victim and accused are “known to each other,” but they did not elaborate on the relationship.

“I am unable to expand on the relationship between the accused and the victim because that could potentially identified the victim,” OPP spokesperson Cheri Rockefeller told the Advertiser.

She added, “this is considered to be an isolated incident and there was no risk to public safety.”

The accused was held for a bail hearing and remains in custody.
